Amanita Muscaria mushrooms, more commonly known as Fly Agaric or Fly Amanitas, have a rich history and deep cultural significance that spans centuries across the world. Notorious for being one of the most iconic toadstools species-- with its unique large red caps dotted in white spots and topped off by creamy white gills -- it has become enshrined not just as an emblematic mushroom in storybooks but also within art, films, video games and cartoons alike. But beyond their role in fairytales lies multiple layers of medicinal benefits; something which many ancient cultures were intimately aware of long before today's researchers began investigating - proving once again why those from antiquity should never be discounted when considering our own discoveries.
Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the "magic mushroom", is an entheogen that produces a unique experience. While it does not have psilocybin or psilocin like other psychoactive mushrooms, A. muscaria boasts its own powerful active compounds -muscimol and ibotenic acid- which generate sedative, depressant and deliriant effects by engaging with the GABAA receptor in your brain.
Although Amanita Muscaria mushrooms are highly toxic in their natural form, with the right preparation and handling they can make for a perfectly safe yet powerful ingredient. Parboiling twice will weaken its toxicity whilst still preserving psychoactive properties; after being parboiled it should be thoroughly dried at low temperature- either via dehydrator or oven - to ensure no harmful effects remain. Eating these fungi raw is NEVER advised as this may lead not only to adverse reactions but also potential allergies from uncooked mushroom proteins! Taking care when preparing your Amanitas means you get all of the benefits without any nasty surprises afterwards.
Muscimol is a powerful psychoactive compound naturally found in certain species of mushroom. It stimulates the GABAA receptors.
Ibotenic acid, a neurotoxic secondary metabolite of Amanita muscaria, is the prodrug for muscimol—during the drying of the mushroom, ibotenic acid is decarboxylated into muscimol. Muscimol is five to six times more potent than ibotenic acid, with fewer harmful side effects.
Despite our Bulk amanita muscaria mushrooms having very strong psychedelic associations in popular culture, it would not be considered psychedelic based on the formal definition. Most compounds considered psychedelic are structurally related to the neurotransmitter's serotonin or dopamine (which are 5-HT2A agonists)—for example, the “classic” psychedelics, LSD, psilocybin/psilocin, and mescaline.
