The correct botanical name of the Kratom tree which is known as ‘Biak-Biak’, ‘ithang’ or ‘mambog’ amongst natives from Southeast Asia, is Mitragyna speciosa (Rubiaceae). This psychoactive plant is grown in the region of Indochina and can be divided into three different strains: Red-vein, Green-vein and White-vein.
All strains are told to have strong beneficial effects on mind and body. Therefore, the plant was traditionally used as an herbal medicine against pain, depression and anxiety.
Agricultural workers who did hard physical labour needed it to increase stamina and endurance in Thailand and Malaysia. Up to 30 fresh leaves were chewed to relieve musculoskeletal pain as well as chronical pain. Its capability as a cure for fever, a treatment for opiate withdrawal or wounds was reported several decades ago.
The leaves contain the alkaloid mitragynine which has been documented to have dose-dependent stimulant and pain relieving effects.
Lower concentrations of those alkaloids like the White veined leaves, more euphoria, energy and focus is experienced. Higher concentrations, like in the red veined leaves, sedating and relaxing effects will occur.
Besides, study shows that the major alkaloid mitragynine has potent opioid agonist property but is structurally different from morphine and other opioid narcotic pain killers. However kratom has not been approved by the FDA yet and cannot be sold as a plant supplement to help with health issues.
